I am always excited when the month of August rolls around. It’s my birth month as well as the anniversary of my ordination/initiation into the Priesthood of Orisa African Spiritual practices.
Many on this Orisa Spiritual path celebrate the 8th month of the year as the time to honor in celebrations to OBATALA, the father of creation the owner of all heads.Obatala is the the energy linked to the color white, purity, clarity, unblemished, spotless and free of moral impurities. Obatala is above reproach, he/she shines like crystal, silver and the sun.He/she is portrayed as the old man who has experienced life, careful planning, countless decisions, and is in a state of wisdom happiness and peace. Obatala is the father of laughter, creative intelligence, comfort, hope and compassion for each other in the world. Obatala is the orisha who brought us cloth as a way of providing covering ,warmth, protection from the elements. He used his sacred plant cotton to make thread and weave into fabrics. Some of the animals that are sacred to it is Gorilla, Snails, Elephant and boa constrictor. The gorilla for his intelligence and ability to adapt easily to situations, snails for his healing and cooling liquids and ability to live on land sea or river. The elephants memory, strength and intelligence shows obatala like characteristics. The boa constrictor moves slowly, patiently and attack’s its pray through tracking the warmth of the victims body.On the video that i share with you is the story of the odu Ofun-Sa which is my Obatala personal life path story. It reminds us of always being obedient to the word of Orumila/Ifa and to follow through with rituals consistently. Failure to do so can open one up to someone whom you hold in confidence will betray you. It is important to not allow the ego to rob you of making intelligent, intelligent decisions.. My latest Cd OBATALA (Available on my website or Itunes,Cd baby)speaks to the gratitude and immense love that i have for Obatala my Orisa, friend, consoler, and comfort. I hope you will find it as enjoyable to you as it was for me to make it.
This is a good time to set up an altar to Obatala as a place where you can sit quietly and receive insights from your own head/mind/consciousness how to better find solutions and a sense of peace. You can enhance this sacredness by choosing one day a week to wear white clothes as a commitment to spreading the power of peace and love in the world Find a place in your home that you can make sacred by putting a small table covered with a white cloth. Add to it a photo of Obatala (available on the internet) You can add figurines, of elephants, an old man or woman. You can add to the space a white candle, a bowl of water, a bowl of cotton, 8 small white balls of efun/cascarilla and 8 small stones.Commit to a daily practice of meditation with my Cd “Obatala” available on my website Yeyefini.comYou may want to add food to your altar, offerings such as rice pudding, bread soaked in milk, merengue or cooked mashed white yam or potatoesHere is a prayer from my Obatala Cd
“I was inspired to make this music as a way of sharing the power and the knowledge of Obatala, the Father of all of the Orisha. Obatala lives inside of each and every one of us, and so Obatala is the owner of all heads. Obatala is our ability to intuit, to download, and connect to peace that everyone is seeking. Obatala is struggle and then peace. Obstruction, and then clarity. The children of Obatala will face many adversities, because only through adversity you can appreciate peace, calm and love. No matter what Obatala goes through as an entity, as an energy, as a force, it always realizes its power by remaining peaceful. By remaining clear, optimistic, and having hope. Obatala is the energy that when you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom, Obatala got your back! When everything else seems dark, or distant, or disorganized, Obatala comes in and gives you clarity. It makes you say, Yes, yes to life. So, this music is an opportunity to look at the challenges you are going through or have been through, and recognize that it’s all going to be fine. When you change your perception from being lost, or victimized, or being traumatized to knowing that “I am bigger than this, I am better than that because I am not alone”. Then, you know Obatala! “
Obatala is an energy to know that your father is protecting you. Your mother is protecting you. That’s Obatala. The male energy, the female energy of peace, tranquility, and knowing that you have the power to be great. The energy of peace, and the triumph over adversity. That is Obatala. When we get bombarded with the little trivial things, Obatala says, ‘all of that which you see down there is irrelevant. What you are seeing is what I see.’ So, whenever you want to connect to Obatala, sit on a mountain, sit on a hill. Sit somewhere that can give you perspective that at the end of the day there is only peace and there is only love. Ashe
Have blessed and peaceful celebration to your Obatala
