Welcome to the New Month of October as We Honor the Ancestors

Welcome to the new month of October as we honor the Ancestors
After last month’s Oya’s winds of change blew into our lives and cleansed us from debris, we now enter into the cycle of the falling leaves in preparation for upcoming winter season. In the latest movie The Woman King we get an  opportunity to connect to the spirit of a woman like Oya, who’s courage commitment, wisdom, and dedication to fight against a foreign enemy that’s determined to destroy her people’s way of life.
Connecting to the spiritual realm of our lives can be a great source of hope, peace and support. In African Spiritual Religious Practices connecting to the ancestors and God can be easily accessible through dance, music and art. This is a great time to set up a sacred space in your home where the family can come together to remember the ancestors through stories, photos, recipes, and even sharing family mementos as a way to remember them. We believe that by calling someone ‘s name after they’ve passed, they’ll never be forgotten
Calling on the ancestors in times of individual, personal, community or global challenges can be a vehicle to bring comfort to those who are in need of it.
In many cultures around the world during the month of October there are very colorful celebrations in honor of All Soul’s day, All Saints Day, Dia de Los Muertos, Halloween, Egungun, Gelede and other types of masquerades.
Please join me on ASK YEYEFINI SHOW Sunday Oct 2, from 7:830 pm EST on Youtube or Facebook!

My guest on this episode is Atokun Ojefemi Akinbola Osunniyi born in South Carolina has been practicing Ancestral veneration all his life, but has taken it to new heights within the last six years. His family has always honored their love ones who came before them. When he became older and moved away from home, he started his journey of wanting to know more about religion but found himself losing religion and finding spirituality. He was initiated to the Egbe Egungun May of 2018. Since then he has been sharing how his ancestors were able to turn around different types of generational trauma within his family and many others he know. Also on this journey he has noticed the gap of ancestral veneration between the diaspora descendant communities and their counterparts. Baba Akinbola and his son Atokun Eegunjobi are very passionate about the power of ancestor veneration as a key to establishing healthy relationship within self, families and the diaspora descendant communities.

Topic of discussion on this month’s show will be:

1) The Importance and process of Ancestral veneration through Consecrating Shrines for our ancestors

2) A Roots Reading/ Spiritual consultation is performed with a cowrie divination and gives information on your family’s spiritual history, their colors, which side of your family that may influence you more. In this reading one receives messages from the ancestors to assist you, your family and future generations. Through ancient rituals and spiritual recommendations, family solutions may be achieved.

3) Egungun is a physical manifestation of a family’s connection to their ancestors through music, dance, masquerade. It is a Yoruba masquerade for ancestor reverence, or the ancestors themselves as a collective force.

4) Gelede is a celebration that involves dance, the arts, and music from all around Yoruba society and pays tribute to female’s creative and mystical power from ancestors, elders and deities. When Yemoja could not have children she consulted the Ifa oracle and she was advised to make sacrifices and to dance with wooden images on her head and metal anklets. Soon after that she conceived two children Efe, a boy and Gelede was the girl who loved dancing. Her children also could not get pregnant. They, like their mother went to Ifa oracle for advice. They made sacrifice, danced with anklets and with carvings on their heads and soon were able to have children. From that day, the practice was started of dancing to Gelede with wooden carvings on their heads with metal anklets.
