01 Feb NEW MONTH OF FEBRUARY, HONORING OLOKUN AND ANCESTORS
Greeting Yeyefini Balanced Living Family:
Rituals of celebration are services honoring and thanking the presence of God’s intelligence everywhere in the world. The intelligence is always present and ready to assist you whenever you are experiencing adversity. The three requirements for sharing in God’s spiritual power are peace in the face of adversity and challenges, oneness and unity with all, and love for all through love for God.
This February we honor the African ancestors of the ocean and the energy that is Olokun. Olokun is the essence of God/Goddess that governs lagoons and seas. Olokun represents the ocean’s ability to redeem and transform the world. He/she also controls the ability to dream. Olokun is the God/Goddess of the salty waters of our body such as blood and sweat. His/her worship and celebration is a request to allow us to open the deep, dark, mysterious parts of our being, which at times become overlooked and unattended in our daily lives.
Olokun’s colors are blue and crystal and its numbers are 4 and 7. The day of the week is Monday. His/her proverb is, no one knows what lies at the bottom of the sea, which means that in life we may sometimes look at a situation one way but in reality there is always a deeper meaning that is not clear to the naked eye.
As a keeper of secrets, Olokun holds the mysteries of what happened to Africans as they crossed the middle passage to the New World in the Transatlantic Slave trade. During this month of honoring Olokun, we give foremost honor and homage to those African ancestors whose burial ground was the sea. During rituals to honor the ancestors and Olokun, Yoruba practitioners in the New World give offerings to the sea to honor its mystery, its power to transform, wash away and heal.
An empowering ritual for the ancestors is calling their names, setting up a sacred space in remembrance of them with pictures and offerings. An empowering ritual for Olokun is to wash in the sea with molasses, lettuce leaf, and using the pulp of a watermelon to scrub, wash, and eliminate spiritual parasites form your being. This is an excellent ritual to disinfect the aura.
The energy of Olokun reminds us of the importance of sharing, charity, gratitude, and optimism, striving for advancement and wealth in a positive manner.
Planet Neptune governs Olokun and his/her energy flows through the colors blue, coral, sea green, and silver.
The latter is an excerpt from my book Household Guide for Yoruba Spiritual Wellness (c) 2004 2nd Edition available at yeyefini.com
