01 Oct Blessed New Month of October honoring “The power in Masquerades”
After last month’s Oya’s winds of change blew into our lives and cleansed us from debris, we now enter into the cycle of the falling leaves in preparation for upcoming winter season, our Children’s Rites of Passage for Teens and Tweens. Registration is now open at Yeyefini.com for the Mediumship Training Course which begins on November 9, 2021Connecting to the spiritual realm of our lives can be a great source of hope, peace and support. In African Spiritual Religious Practices connecting to the ancestors and God can be easily accessible through dance, music and art.Calling on the ancestors in times of individual, personal, community or global challenges can be a vehicle to bring comfort to those who are in need of it.In many cultures around the world during the month of October there are very colorful celebrations in honor of All Soul’s day, All Saints Day, Dia de Los Muertos, Halloween, Egungun, Gelede and other types of masquerades.
On the ASK YEYEFINI SHOW Sunday October 3, at 7:00 pm EST on Facebook and YouTube we will be sharing: What is a Roots Reading, What is Egungun and What is Gelede.
A Roots Reading/ Spiritual consultation is performed with a cowrie divination and gives information on your family’s spiritual history, their colors, which side of your family that may influence you more. In this reading one receives messages from the ancestors to assist you, your family and future generations. Through ancient rituals and spiritual recommendations, family solutions may be achieved.
Egungun is a physical manifestation of a family’s connection to their ancestors through music, dance, masquerade. It is a Yoruba masquerade for ancestor reverence, or the ancestors themselves as a collective force.
Gelede is a celebration that involves dance, the arts, and music from all around Yoruba society and pays tribute to female’s creative and mystical power from ancestors, elders and deities. When Yemonja could not have children she consulted the Ifa oracle and she was advised to make sacrifices and to dance with wooden images on her head and metal anklets. Soon after that she conceived two children Efe, a boy and Gelede was the girl who loved dancing. Her children also could not get pregnant. They, like their mother went to Ifa oracle for advice. They made sacrifice, danced with anklets and with carvings on their heads and soon were able to have children. From that day, the practice was started of dancing to Gelede with wooden carvings on their heads with metal anklets. On this episode of the Ask Yeyefini Show, Chief Alagba Babatunde Akinsegun known personally as ‘Babatunde” will be my guest. He is a priest of Obatala since age eleven and a member of Egbe Egungun (group dedicated to the veneration of our ancestors) since age 13. At the age of seven Babatunde began traveling across the nation as one of a few drummers with Oyotunji’s first king – the great Oba Efuntola Adefunmi. He later received a double bachelor degree in Visual Arts at South Carolina State University. Babatunde became the official chief Alagba in 2011. The Alagba is the chief of staff to the ancestor veneration society.
