CLASS 1: What is Trauma and how does it start? Trauma can be caused by an overwhelmingly negative event that causes a lasting impact on the victim’s mental, spiritual and emotional stability. While many sources of trauma are physically violent in nature, others are psychological. Some common sources of trauma include: Rape Domestic violence Natural disasters Severe illness or injury The death of a loved one Witnessing an act of violence Cross generational Inherited family trauma.

WHAT : Trauma is defined by the American Psychological Association (APA) as the emotional response someone has to an extremely negative event. While trauma is a normal reaction to a horrible event, the effects can be so severe that they interfere with an individual’s ability to live a normal life A growing number of our most critical thinkers believe that African-Americans suffer from a form of psychological trauma that has been dubbed post-traumatic slave syndrome. We can look at this syndrome to help us understand why the model of post-traumatic slave syndrome is useful for explaining how some troubling problems in our community—from Black-on-Black violence to skin-color drama—may have their roots in slavery.

WHY : This class is important when studying and/or converting to an African spiritual practice to understand the culture and psychology from an African world view This class will help understand and have a deeper appreciation for the roles of priests, students, the hierarchy within an egbe, (spiritual group) while building a long lasting mutually respectful relationship with your elders, teachers and community.

HOW: You will recognize and understand how your current emotional desire for healing from trauma has an effect on how you embrace the wholeness of living a more African centered spiritual life on the way to Orisa initiation.
