Honoring Yemonja for the Month of July; the Sign of Cancer

Honoring Yemonja for the Month of July; the Sign of Cancer

Yemonja is the great mother Orisha of the oceans, motherhood, family, protection, and nurturing love. Her name is often understood as “Mother Whose Children are like Fish” reflecting her role as the mother of many and the source of life. Yemonja teaches us that true strength can be expressed through love, patience, and care.

Yemonja connects to the part of our spirit that is our memory. This is a great time for us to focus on recalling or remembering the things in our lives that have empowered us and disempowered us. This is a time when we go into our spirit for healing as Yemonja governs the part of our spirit that allows us to recall. The things that we know about ourselves, the things that we use to identify who we are, are a part of our being that intuits. Yemonja is mothering, healing, and nurturing. This is the time to celebrate one’s family and relatives. It is time for connecting to all of the nurturing women who have impacted one’s life. Yemonja is the top euphotic layer of the ocean, which is conducive to the growth of plants and anima;s; which permits the continuance of life, and the largest environment for life in the world. The ocean is therefore the most fruitful of surroundings, and acts as a womb for the generation of life. Yemomja is an Orisha of the river , but to new world devotees she has taken on greater proportions. The ocean, her symbol, has been compared to the womb and she is seen as the deliverer of the children of the Middle Passage. The Yemonja symbol is the fish, the representation of ocean life. She is also represented by the duck, a bird that fishes and is adapted for swimming. Yemonja’s number is seven and her colors are blue, white, silver, and crystal.

A Call to Heal  taken from Dr. Ayoka Wiles Quinones book “I hear Olofi’s Song”

It is Yemonja whom I call in the morning.

It is Yemonja whom I call at night.

And yes, it is Yemonja who answers.

I pray that Yemonja envelops me and takes me into her bosom to nurture and mother me.

Yemoja, with your unconditional and non-judgemental love,

Take hold of me, so I always feel your presence even when I may forget your there.

Where I feel lonely, place your love upon my heart.

Please activate your divine consciousness in me every moment so I may have faith in your love.

Help me Yemonja to transcend my subconscious thoughts that are full of illusions and wash it away with your healing waters, so I may be refreshed. Like the vast waters, allow me to see the vastness and immense abundance of your universe. Wash my head clear so I may create the conditions in my life to support the depth of creativity that you have birthed in me.

Let me be a creative vehicle.

Moving, shifting, transforming, and living a life full of love and harmony.

This is a great time to heal wounds between Mother and son, Mother and Daughter. During the next seven days visualize you sitting in the lap of your Mother and being held by her embrace, also visualize the roles being reversed, your Mother sitting in your lap being held by you. This is a powerful visualization to do along with the Yemonja meditation.
